The idea for this pet first aid course started when
Ethne Dickinson was faced with a dying animal and did not know what to do. A few years after moving to Canada, she was driving along a residential street when a dog ran out from between parked cars and under the wheel of her car. The dog was lying in obvious pain and bleeding from its ears and nose.
Although a nurse, Ethne felt helpless and was unable to even approach the animal. The dog began to convulse and then died. The whole process was over in a matter of minutes, but it seemed forever. As an animal owner and lover Ethne was upset by this traumatic incident.
The feeling of helplessness stayed in her mind and it prompted her, years later, to develop the Pet First Aid course. After 18 months of careful development, in consultation with veterinarians and animal health technologists, the first course ran in Calgary.
There are now Walk 'N' Wags Pet Care, Pet First Aid instructors across Canada and the United States.
